President’s Message

President Gordon Knox's
thoughts from across the
pond—and looking towards
SFAI's future.

Dear friends,

I write to you having just returned from Hamburg, Germany, where SFAI was one of 15 leading art schools in the world invited by HFBK – the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg to a symposium honoring that school’s 250th anniversary. It was an extraordinary convening, and a reminder of the influence that SFAI has had on a global scale.

That impact comes from the collective force of artists-as-agents. In my first six months as President of SFAI, I have been energized by this community’s belief in the essential role the arts play in our changing world and trust in the power of artists to advance critical dialogue. As you’ll see in the stories, interviews, and photos in this edition of Art + Effect, our students, faculty, alumni, trustees (and even the next generation of SFAI babies!) continually explore, instigate, cast fresh light on histories, and shape new paths.

The coming months promise to be exciting as SFAI reorients around the extraordinary possibilities of our new Fort Mason campus — the single biggest advancement for the school in a half-century, and key to our goal of delivering transformative educational and artistic experiences to all our students and a broad public. Alumni and supporters are key partners in this effort. Thank you for your ongoing engagement.
