Iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz visited the stunning CAROLANDS Château on June 13, 2019 for a lively celebration with the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), the legendary art school where she studied in the late 1960s. She shared her life’s journey-in-photographs with an intimate crowd of one hundred guests within the beautifully preserved mansion, from her formative student days in the darkroom at SFAI to touring with the Rolling Stones and photographing Queen Elizabeth II. At the close of the evening Leibovitz remarked of her unparalleled career: “I truly am here because of the San Francisco Art Institute.”

A word from SFAI President, Gordon Knox:
At SFAI, we fundamentally believe that artists play a critical role in society. Through their work, artists ask important and sometimes difficult questions about what it means to be human, confronting and challening the status quo so that meaningful change can happen. As national rhetoric continues to denigrate the value of higher education, particularly arts education, we stand firm that SFAI, a school devoted to nurturing emerging artists as critical thinkers and thought-leaders, has an urgent and essential mission.
