We are so pleased that you would like to take a Continuing Education course. Please read through the visa information below. If you have any additional questions, please email us at: continuinged@sfai.edu.
If you plan to enter the United States on a B-type tourist visa, or are currently in the United States on another visa type, you may only be authorized to take coursework for personal enrichment. In other words, you may not enroll in courses for academic credit. Continuing Education courses fit this enrichment-only requirement and you would be eligible to enroll in any SFAI Continuing Education course as a tourist in the United States.
As Continuing Education courses are noncredit, and for personal enrichment only, this program does not fulfill the requirements for I-20 certificates for the F-1 student visa. There is no appropriate visa category for students whose primary purpose for coming to the United States is part-time study. To attend SFAI as an F1 visa holder, you must be formally admitted to a full-time, degree-seeking program.
Yes, you can! You have the option to enter both billing information, indicating who is paying for the course, as well as "registrant information", who is taking the course, during checkout.
Of course, call us at 415.749.4554!
Visit our policies page for complete details on course refunds.
It does not. Materials lists are provided to students prior to the course start date. Materials can range in cost from $0-$250 depending on the course. If you have concerns about the cost of materials or have trouble locating your materials list, please contact Continuing Education staff at continuinged@sfai.edu
Materials lists are posted on each course page approximately two weeks before the course start date. Find your course in the schedule, click on the course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" to view or download the PDF. Students should expect to bring all materials to the first class, unless otherwise instructed.
Most SFAI studios are only available to Continuing Education students during class time. Studio courses are immersive and hands-on, providing students with ample time to complete their projects. The Digital Imaging Studio is available by appointment, allowing students to expertly print digital files. The Friday Open Drawing studio offers students the opportunity to drop in and work from a figure model.
No. We do not allow auditing in Continuing Education courses. If you are unsure of a course, please contact our staff and we will be happy to put you in touch with the instructor to get you as much information as possible.
All classes, unless otherwise indicated, take place at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You will find directions by car or public transit to our campus online.
If you are driving, please see information about parking below.
SFAI Chestnut Campus is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9pm, so evening Continuing Education students do not need to move their cars unless you arrive prior to 7pm.
If you are unfamiliar with campus, and want a sneak peek, we invite you to visit SFAI virtually through our online tour.
Course schedules are posted days before registration begins:
Spring registration begins December 1
Summer registration begins April 1
Fall registration begins July 1
We will send you an email to notify you once registration is open. If you’re not on our emailing list, please request information or send a message to continuinged@sfai.edu
We do not offer any certificates at this time. All of our Continuing Education courses are non-credit. If you need proof of enrollment, we are happy to provide a letter stating that you were enrolled in a course(s). No official transcript is available.
We send out a call for instructors once a year. To receive the call, email a letter of interest to continuinged@sfai.edu
The minimum age for enrollment in Continuing Education courses is 17. We also offer two summer programs for teenagers:
Young Artist Program (ages 13–15)
PreCollege Program (ages 16–18)
