Tunnels of the Mind

On view: June 10–15, 2020 in NYC; June 12+13, 2020 in SF

SFAI, in association with ZAZ Corner, presents Tunnels of the Mind, a selection of 18 recent works by SFAI-affiliated artists, appearing on a Jumbotron in Times Square, New York City, starting at 7am on June 10, 2020 and running through June 15, 2020 at midnight.

On Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 9pm PDT, SFAI will project the entire program in San Francisco on the school’s landmark tower at Chestnut Street Campus—the screening will be visible to audiences throughout the city’s North Beach neighborhood. Synchronously, ZAZ Corner will feature a special midnight screening in New York, making this evening a live bi-coastal act of East Coast-West Coast solidarity.

BFA Exhibition 2020

2020 BFA Exhibition–a virtual show honoring the graduating class.

On view May 15 through June 20, 2020

Through the years, the places SFAI holds dear have often been outside of the “gallery” spaces, and instead within the spaces where we congregate and commune. Whether that is next to the fountain, under the tower or in the meadow. This year, we wanted to honor the graduating BFA cohort with a nod to nostalgia and a sentiment to the longing we are all feeling as we are forced apart.

We invite you to view this exhibition showcasing their works by delving into the three rooms below. These three rooms, named after SFAI’s Chestnut Campus’ meeting spaces (fountain, meadow and tower), are organized alphabetically by the artists’ last names per the lists below. Explore the artist’s cards and each room’s collective image gallery, discover more of the artists’ work by clicking through to their individual websites and social media, and build new connections with this new generation of unparalleled artists. And join us in congratulating the graduating class of 2020!

MFA Exhibition 2020 Fog Room

Collin McEachran Smith

Collin’s work draws from his background in critical geography and broadly examines how our ideological constructions inform the production of space, and how in turn we are governed by the spaces we inhabit.

Curiosity and a deep interest in knowledge is at the core of my practice. I take concepts, objects, and language apart, figure out how they tick and try to put them back together with playful self-awareness. I create cognitive dissonance by defamiliarizing common objects or phrases to recontextualize these concepts and metaphors, working to create a magical weirdness in the work.

The erasure of my childhood home town by the anthropogenic 2018 Camp Fire has me considering the causal effects of human activity. I use natural and man-made materials collected from within the burn area to convey the fragility exposed when fine natural balances are disrupted, challenging the rationality of proceeding as if we can infinitely exploit our finite planet.

Christopher Williams

My art practice focuses on Black Joy- a spiritual feeling that has uplifted the African Diaspora through countless trials and tribulations in the quest for freedom and equality. It defies a simplistic explanation.

Black Joy is like a heartbeat. Never bitter, it is sweeter than the blackest of cherries or the richest of chocolates. It’s like a steady climb or an out of frame kiss. It is a moment that is magical and void of being Black, judged and discriminated against. My joy, my Black Joy may not be the same as the next. It is my vehicle for connection, educating others and sharing my experience as a Black man.

What makes the journey of my work unique is my ability to develop authentic empathy for my subject matter. I have found this process is like walking to the edge of darkness and then summoning the courage to take one more step to understand what lies beyond our differences. These steps are necessary to overcome bigotry, hatred and indifference, to embrace the pursuit of joy.

My work is directly connected to my identity and heritage, and centers on femininity and indigeneity as embodied through the vivid paintings, basket designs, and experiences of native women. I use the specifically gendered objects of my culture, such as Yurok basket caps and Paiute shawls, to inspire a new understanding of the gaze, lineage, and the self. Specifically in engaging contemporary materials, such as digital renderings and sculptures, through a humanizing, indigenous knowledge system.

Since I was a kid, I always spent a lot of time with toys. The relationship between human and artificial objects fascinated me. Thus, I want to discuss this feeling through my works.

I am interested in finding the middle point of everything, abstract or non-abstract. There is always grey space in between everything. For instance, how we define if a thing is functional or not functional to us, and how this middle point is different to every person based on our different backgrounds.

Japanese mythology and Chinese mythology are two types of mythology in my work. Religion is also in my work, and there are the churches of Rome compared with the churches of San Francisco. My film series demonstrate the need for deep belief in God. Interesting variation is contained in the films depicting worship songs, each having different lyrics but the same meaning of humbling oneself in front of God. I am interested in imitating Japanese prints.

My work is about my journey throughout the inner worlds. About my roots that stem in the Eastern Cultures while a majority of us are breathing in a Westernized world. My passion to play with light and shadows will pursue me till the end.

Using artwork to express the dilemma of having a traditional conversation within the digital age, I intend for my work to represent how our collective obsession with these new modes of communication has forever changed the function of conversation. Opposing subject and environment coexist within a single space, featuring binary aspects such as the contemporary and the historical, impression or realism, raw and flat, truth or lies.

Sang Chi Liu

My work focuses on the philosophical aspects of contemporary visual culture. My work explores machine vision and the ways in which it is constructed by the many forms of electronic eyes that scrutinize people’s lives. By creating a visual language that is performative and sculptural, my work expands the spectrum of machine vision and the human body.

Chen Lyu

Humans lighting up technology, the human touch being itself full of energy, light, chi - a manifestation of our potential. The interactive device connects to the future and forms a closed line with the possibilities of the future.

This is a dual virtual space. The combination with energy and electricity, spiritual and formal, historical and contemporary. Elegant, making the intangible tangible. A clean visual aesthetic rooted in a monochrome sensibility, allowing for subtlety and nuance.

As a student from Europe now studying in the United States, I am experienced in the art of Chinese ink painting, which relies upon the philosophy of opposition and harmony as well as the variability of how ink may flow from a brush. These works merged art and technology since both fields require experimentation as well as play with contrasting elements.

My practice focuses on ideas about space as they relate to popular science, architecture, and urban, social and visual studies. I prefer using everyday materials. I intend to show how space is understood relationally, culturally and metaphorically, and to abide in a feeling of curiosity and wonderment in regards to such matters.

My paintings are in direct response to the landscape of climate catastrophe. I am enraptured by disaster, unable to look away. The landscape in pain is repulsive and seductive, mirroring our current ecological moral quagmire - the inability to stop our ravenous consumption despite knowing its consequences. My paintings resonate between utter indulgent ecstasy and sublime terror. Through painting I attempt to understand the violence brought upon the land and my own hand’s involvement.

My studies at SFAI inspired me to create “BENJO17mfg,” a fictitious business that embodies the dubious values and corporate shenanigans of modern mega-entities. BENJO exposes the substandard workmanship and contemptible business practices of careless companies, disarming them via dark satire, wry sarcasm, and tongue-in-cheek reverse engineering. With BENJO as a springboard, my focus has broadened to larger-scale, reduced-narrative works exploring the interface between disparate materials. Thank you, SFAI!

Shara Mays

My work is autobiographical, yet the questions it suggests are deconstructed into a nuanced universal discourse, provoking larger discussions around race, identity politics, and our culture at-large. My practice explores the social and psychological construct of race and identity in contemporary American society. My multi-disciplinary practice moves through painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and video. Specific work explores the politics of identity within the spaces around me, whether they be physical or psychological, societal or personal.

Image-making, people, and choices are my subjects. Oil paint is my tool.

Whistleblowers, heroes, life-savers, call them by any name you choose but remember this: they are just people like us. But are they? These individuals take a stand for a better tomorrow. They take action that makes a difference — they confront inequity, giving voice to the naive and abused. The recent painting’s title and subject asks the question, What Would You Do?

We live in a privileged country and society and we can choose and decide to act each and every day. Our climate is in danger, we are amid a pandemic that is predicted to return. Our lives seem important but are they more important than the collective? I am asking us to listen to our compassion and hope, to consider our actions and how we can leave the world better when we depart.

They are tragic figures and they are hope. I paint for the best in humanity to work for those yet to come and I ask you given what is at stake, what would you do?

evan pettiglio

How may we honor memory and release memory simultaneously? Concerned with the connections between memory, trauma and domestic spaces my work deifies tangible objects representative of the pain and joy contained in our ability to remember. My work is an entry point to vivid narratives strewn with a quiet urgency; a profound need to venerate the residue of the past. I work sculpturally with predominantly textile, glass, clay, metal, and stone, among a wide variety of other sculptural materials. Utilizing domestic spaces and familiar objects as points of entry, I interrogate the way place can stain us.

I create sculptural photographs that use either technology or traditional building/construction materials in juxtaposition to the photographic fine art print. There’s a continuous push and pull between where the two-dimensional begins and the three-dimensional space ends. I’m interested in exploring the line between sculpture and photography, as well as a conversation around what constitutes a photograph in today’s world where images are ubiquitous.

Cinema always distorts perspective and gender is always performed. As a queer femme drag artist who uses film, performance and installation I rely on elaborate costuming, makeup, sets and narratives involving over the top tropes of femininity to produce luxurious fantasy on stage and screen. Dreamy, magical queer worlds are created with DIY strategies and analogue special effects using the elements of artifice not as a “mask” but as an exposure of truth.

Both body and land are perpetually violated without due regard for their respective agencies. Through this interwoven relationship, I explore a form of understanding with the land, while also coming to terms with my particular positionality as a descendent of colonizers and loggers. In asking what it would take to fully recognize the debts my family owes, my work positions the land (and our relationship) as sites and participants in remembrance, rootedness, resistance, and resolve.

My work explores personal sensibility alongside natural and human marks in history, with cultural, sociological and geographical experiences and perspectives. The beauty and fear, the straight and distorted, the remembrance and obliteration, the subtle and inscrutable—mirroring our existence and connections in this world.

My research and visual practices embody the multivalency of visibility and obstruction. Utilizing performance, video, sculpture, and sound I manifest personal traumas. Layers of traditionally gendered and unconventional uses for recognizable materials become the catalyst for creating abject works that cause both intrigue and repulsion. I position the witness in the middle of these installations leaving them to grapple with my body as I exhaust myself past my limit through durational action.

Searching for a connection with complex family histories and deciphering my challenging but inspiring Indian culture, I stumbled upon nostalgic associations with cotton, honeycombs, and pomegranates. These metaphorical symbols deal with the innocence of childhood, the complexity of a home, and issues of seduction and puberty. Oil on canvas is my preferred medium. Through gestural abstraction, I improvise a conceptual landscape, resulting in a percussion of allegorical layers.

What is the logic of choreography and how can it be applied to marks on a page? In these works I am giving the body and time the same reverence, finding an actualized politics of space on the page. It is movement, it is impulse. It is reverence for the subtleties. It is listening.

Taylor Ann Berry

Through two-dimensional paintings, three-dimensional sculptures, and wall installations; Taylor Ann Berry creates works that intrigue viewers and evoke a desire to investigate the forms, materials, colors, and images used in her pieces. The process of abstraction and transformation allows multi-layered images to arise and highlights the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality. Through the unification of media, systems, and overall abstractions; Berry conceives fantasy spaces that both seduce and repel the viewer.

These images show parts of immersive, shared sensory experiences where visitors encounter an unfamiliar, shifting, responsive, otherworldly space; themselves; and each other — within this space.

A Physio-temporal Art Practice

Physio—relating to nature and natural phenomena Temporal—relating to indefinite time as opposed to eternity, material, progressive, religious

Physio-temporal aims to disclose the dichotomic consequences of the perceptible and the indiscernible—the sensorial threshold. It is an anti-thesis to conventional thought, which incites de-acculturation processes that confront a conditioned mindset. In a similar way to time, my practice follows a phenomenological approach to space, emphasizing impermanence as an effort to subvert the established.

In these abstract self-portraits and psychological landscapes, there is a platform for various identities to interact together on a 2-dimensional surface. Steeped into different times and spaces through a process of layered mark-making, haphazard recollections and feelings appear as lines and shapes. The markings are the language by which memories are communicated. The paintings, drawings, and collages are a form of material rituals that create a space to engage with.

I consider the little everyday pressures that add up to quietly loom in the background of our lives. I explore the tensions created by precarity and how they affect our relationships as we attempt to hold on to the good memories.

Mónica Coelho

I am interested in how we, as humans, function (body), what we believe, how we behave, and the distance between those parts of us. I am interested in how reality is perceived. I see art as the creator of an experience to be completed by each person’s own perspective of the world. To test my own perception and others, I often use space. I believe space is a very powerful tool in how the present is experienced, and how decisions are made even without being aware of them. Using these elements, my work and the process of making it points at the nonsense of the world and helps me understand it.

The last two years I have been focused on understanding Time. I started by exploring waiting spaces and moments, as well as gestures of hope. I realized that waiting and hoping come from the same verb in Portuguese, Esperar. Lately I have been exploring time as a measurement. In my work I seek to understand how the passage of time is counted and organized versus how it is perceived daily and what marks it leaves.

Samuel De Lemos

Samuel De Lemos is a painter, philosopher, teacher, and poet. De Lemos draws from poetry, philosophy, and pedagogy to critique, parody, and analyze contemporary societal ironies, and paradoxes, and considers these cultural idiosyncrasies a rich well from where to draw and create. His creations can be in the form of a painting, filmmaking or sculpture, even animation. De Lemos often uses his discoveries to enrich his pedagogical discourse.

Both disorienting and stabilizing, the transmedia work together to invert the physical space in which the piece currently resides. The laboring figure recognizes the camera as a bias tool, subservient to the surface or hands that carry it. Through abstraction, the act of generating representation becomes visibly more complex and conceptually scrutinized. The main pursuit of Contact Circuits is to provide an acute embodiment of the limitations when reinterpreting an experience through a fixed body, lens, and screen.

I run nine laps, turning the video cameras on or off as I pass by them. Then, I manually synchronize the five separate videos to play in the same order in which the action occurred. Each monitor or projector is installed where the footage it’s playing was previously filmed.

Imagery and imagination, through the eyes of a visual artist, brings more sense to the world. Contrasts in color and shapes, take on the experience and representation of the artist, who takes them all and creates a visual expression of life itself.

Giuliana Funkhouser

I’m interested in meeting the Wizard, how about you? My artwork interrogates contemporary mass media entertainment and “content delivery” platforms promising instant connection while fragmenting reality in unprecedented ways. By presenting the darkly Babylonian aspects of weaponized narrative and social media interactions through photo and sound art installations I hope to celebrate the people and places continually pushed to the wayside in the name of technological acceleration, economic expansion and the siren song of paradise.

My paintings explore vast natural landscapes and how they are intimately tied to our bodies. I paint outside with oversized canvases and found materials. Through texture, layering, and movement of pigments, organic materials are brought into the work; ocean water, rain, sand, grass, leaves, bark, and dirt pigment become part of the painting. In the studio, I explore the relationship of constructed spaces with natural elements to develop immersive experiences.

Imani Maryahm Harrington

As an established pioneer who wrote the first literary play on the representation of women and HIV/AIDS and culture and also on post Hurricane Katrina topics, Imani Maryahm Harrington continues to incite critical practice about the relationships public and private domains have with rapid changes in the environment. Harrington’s practice and interests include the dynamics of collapses, erasures and erosions of public health with a vast need to explore interdisciplinary dimensions of time and space, and capturing visual pictorial literary lenses using multiple realms.

Through a destructive process, exhumed works are constructed of both collected material and found objects that resonate with personal traumas, memories, or appeal to the aestheticized & destroyed object. The work guides the viewer's attention to the visual object (icon)'s sediments of time and decay, in what I've come to describe as Post-Opulence.

“Gendered Machines": any non-human, mechanical objects that are associated with, signifiers of, or assigned a gender. My recent work is concerned with understanding how this phenomenon manifests in lived and fictional realities. A limiting and polarizing codification is typically imposed onto the objects that people create, use, and identify with, where things are generally understood to be either objects of service or of domination. This is a patriarchal oversimplification that my work seeks to complicate.

Having served my mandatory two-year service with the military, the ceasefire line has never left my mind. As I reflect back, the ceasefire line gives me confused feelings of sadness and frustration. My paintings are visual experiences of my internal pain that I feel every time I think about the border between North and South Korea. The beautiful landscape has been forever changed due to the military activity.

I am in the mystery of existence, creating paintings as signposts to my location: geographical, psychological, subjective, and spiritual. I want to reveal myself. I want to conceal myself.

I am in the mystery of existence, creating sounds as beacons of my converging routes. Burning into dust, notes disappear. Burying into bodies, vibrations find a home.

My work is related to the interaction between individuals and the world—how different social, political, and cultural powers influence individuals and how individuals react to that, especially the aesthetics, contradiction, and complexity between fragility and toughness, decay and development, loss and hope.

My work explores the boundaries of distance and intimacy, objectivity and subjectivity, and the relationship and responsibility between artist and subject.
