The Master Never Talks Of

Confucius views “extraordinary things, feats of strength, disorder, and spiritual beings” as taboo. Nevertheless, Chinese contemporary culture embraces martial arts, physical power and mythological deities. Drawing on influences from Hong Kong martial arts films from the 1990s, The Master Never Talks Of explores how Kung Fu films reinforce the dynamic duality derived from the notion of yin and yang in Chinese cosmology, along with dominant moral distinctions of justice and wickedness.

From animations created by translating the choreography of heroes and villains, to drawings utilizing “Heibai Wuchang” (Black and White Impermanence), a concept in Chinese folk religion, this iconic presentation of dualism pays homage to the deities of justice and fortune; rewards and punishment.
