Join SFAI for the first student exhibition of the Spring 2017 semester. Featuring student works by Daieny Chin, Paige Valentine, Marley Walker-Morin, and Maryam Yousif.
As a group of painters working at San Francisco Art Institute, Daieny Chin, Marley Walker-Morin, Paige Valentine, and Maryam Yousif are all interested in the constant tension between the figurative and the abstract and in confronting the challenges that arise from those tensions. With the two stylistic approaches of painting seeming constantly at odds in the artistic climate at the institution of SFAI, these works create a space for painting that does not declare itself to be either figurative or abstract. Rather than the works defining themselves as rigidly associated with a genre, the paintings focus on paint as substantial content, color, and the relationship between form and content. The artists are concerned with observing found photographs, drawings, and art historical imagery. These works attempt to reconcile these tensions in allowing figurative and abstract methods of painting to exist on the same canvas, without perpetuating conventions.
