The Swell Gallery presents “the token show”, a group show curated by Diana Li featuring work by Alysia Davis, Diana Li, Mariela Montero, Manny Robertson, and Paolo Salazar.
“the token show” is grounded in work by artists engaging with artifactual, commodified and tokenized icons that represent cultural and traditional tropes on the current state of their identity. As a reaction to uncomfortable silences and burdened explanations in the discussion of identity-based art, “the token show” emboldens an intersectional framework to promote a deeper lens toward token representations. Within the space of the Swell Gallery as a vestibule connecting the outside to the inside site of learning in the lecture hall, the show activates contemporary questions about artistic and ethnographic study and practice in a post-multicultural era.
The Swell Gallery is located on the second floor of SFAI's Graduate Center at 2565 3rd Street. Enter from ground level on 22nd Street and the gallery is the first door on the right after arriving at the second floor from the stairwell.
