Stimulus Packages focuses on those modes of criticism, art, and life that oblige one to critically enjoy the world in ways that circumvent programs of conspicuous consumption and normative sexuality. It suggests that more repressed forms of criticality and artistic practice are doomed to fail those subjects whose pursuits of pleasure are inherently marginalized or legislated against. It also considers how critical hedonism might be particularly relevant in relation to the cultures of scarcity and austerity incurred by the recent global economic crisis—cultures which are presently compelling one to give-up on all sorts of frivolous social, aesthetic, and academic projects.

Arnold Kemp’s artworks are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Berkeley Art Museum. He is also a writer and has read on street corners, in living rooms in Oakland, and in bars and bookstores in San Francisco, Berkeley, and New York. His writing has appeared in Callaloo, Three Rivers Poetry Journal, Agni Review, and many more publications. Exuberant and witty, Charles Atlas’ Hail the New Puritan is a simulated day-in-the-life “docufantasy” starring the British dance celebrity Michael Clark. Atlas' fictive portrait of the charismatic choreographer serves as a vivid invocation of the studied decadence of the 1980’s post-punk London subculture. Focusing on Clark's flamboyantly postured eroticism and the artifice of his provocative balletic performances, Atlas posits the dance as a physical manifestation of Clark's psychology.
