Macho Ritual and the Performance of Masculinity
Shaun Leonardo (MFA Painting, 2005) probes conventions of portraiture to reveal complexities of masculinity and manhood. Through self-conscious and physically demanding performances, as well as cutout paintings, drawings, and sculptures, his work negotiates ideals of worth, achievement, and maleness. Leonardo is the recipient of awards from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, New York Studio School, NYFA, and The Jerome Foundation. His work was recently exhibited in Crossing Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Museum.
