Ceramics are mastered in the hands, not in the mind. Ceramics are created by physical actions, rather that abstract ideas. However, even though Ceramics have as much a form of art as any other form of art, the identity of ceramics has been considered to have an inferior concept of imagination, not to be at the same level of intellectual integrity, and to have inferior social presence.
Portraits in Ceramics presents an art form that is created by this process. Here, the connection between the artist’s action and clay –including its limits and its possibilities - -becomes responsible for judging the success of the resulting art work. This body of work references the idea of artistic action can only exist in relationship to its own materials, which cannot be directed to a specific end.
