Join us for the opening reception of Hyper Femme // Heavenly Flesh, featuring works by Katherine Boxall, Anna Bongiovanni, and Ali Futrel.

In this contemporary moment, women literally wear the many different social perceptions and animosities on their skin. The visceral nature of soft-flesh, make-up, and the placement of garments reflect not only the glamour explored but also the tangible humanity of the metamorphosis. It is our task as female visual artists to navigate patriarchal spaces by inserting ourselves into our narratives and subverting the typically male gaze. In transient, chaotic, and intimate scenes we perform and celebrate feminine identity and it’s relationship to glamour and narcissism. In these scenes of performance, we illustrate the fascinating but disparaging extremes within narcissism, hyper-sexuality, and self-loathing that are all true to the experience of what it means to be femme. Using the body as a metaphor, we are demanding the attention of the typically passive viewer to engage critically through a voyeuristic gaze.
