Michael Jones McKean’s peripatetic practice connects seemingly disparate cultural histories to specific forms. His sculptures and installations have included enclosed storms, half-scale riverboats, prehistoric meteorites, and urban-scale rainbows. He constructs spaces of uncanny scale—failed epics, specific objects that serve as synecdoche for expansive narratives, or condensed moments of universal phenomena. McKean is the recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Artadia Award. He is associate professor of sculpture and extended media at Virginia Commonwealth University.
