Marcel Houtzager came to the US from Brazil to get his BA at Pomona College, where he majored in economics (and learned to paint). After an MBA from UC Berkeley, he spent 30 years in finance, the last 25 of which focused on investing in small to midsize public companies outside the US on behalf of family offices, endowments, and pension funds. His firm often takes significant stakes in investee companies and engages in various forms of friendly activism to hopefully add or unlock value. Marcel is also currently assisting his adult children with several art-related projects. These include the buildout of an art studio complex in the Marinship neighborhood of Sausalito, curation and programming of online art history resources aimed at making art history more accessible to a lay audience, publication of an art history trivia game, a project to help bring art-related programming from several Smithsonian institutions to San Francisco, and management of a not for profit art gallery at Fort Mason which hosts juried competitions for MFA students from eight Bay Area graduate programs, including SFAI. In addition, Marcel devotes much of his spare time and resources to caring for dogs and sailing.
