Erica Deeman’s work visualizes themes of identity, gender and race. She engages her audience to question the way in which they evaluate the face through their own visual expectations and historical portrayals. Exploring the tradition of portraiture, she places the photograph at the forefront of the conversation.

A recent artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts, solo shows include Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Permanent collections include Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; New Orleans Museum of Art; Pérez Art Museum Miami; and Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco.
