Cristina Velázquez is an interdisciplinary visual artist who reuses and transforms everyday obsolete objects into works of art, addressing feminist and ecological issues through the term Ecofeminism. She was born in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, Mexico and immigrated to the U.S. in 1987.
Velázquez earned a Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in painting from San Jose State University in 2001, and a Masters of Arts and Masters of Fine Arts: History and Theory of Contemporary Art and Studio Art from San Francisco Art Institute in 2017.
Velázquez’ work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at venues including; The Foundry Art Center in Missouri, Palo Alto Art Center in Palo Alto, Gallery nine5 in New York, Art Ark Gallery in San Jose, Meridian Gallery in San Francisco, Euphrat Museum at De Anza College in Cupertino, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, and MACLA in San Jose to name a few. Velázquez had her first Artist In Residence at the Palo Alto Art Center in 2014-2015, then she was Student Artist In Residence at Recology in San Francisco in 2016, and most recently an Artist In Residence at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, 2017, New York Mills Retreat and Residency, New York Mills, MN, 2018.
