Fellowships, grants, and scholarships are considered “gift” aid that does not need to be repaid and that directly reduces your billed tuition and fees each semester. Students receive need-based and merit-based scholarships and grants.
Fellowships and Scholarships are renewable provided you have been notified of renewal eligibility at the time you receive the award and you meet these criteria. For instance, renewable SFAI scholarships require maintaining a specific grade point average and continuous study.
Most Grants (federal, state, and SFAI need-based) require that you reapply for financial aid each year. The renewal deadline for completing the FAFSA is March 1 of each year.
Carlos Villa (1936– 2013) was a Filipino American artist, curator, activist, and SFAI teacher of countless emerging artists — including household names like Obama portraitist Kehinde Wiley. Villa created spectacular, visually magical worlds of feathers and bones, capes and masks, tattoos and blood. Learn more >>
