Lance Acord (BFA 89) has been selected for a Mobius Award in Cinematography

Michael Arcega (BFA 99) received a residency at Montavlo Art Center, Saratoga, CA

J.D. Beltran (MFA 98) was awarded a writing workshop fellowship for her work in her art and culture column, City Brights blog feature on the San Francisco Chronicle’s online edition. It was awarded by the International Art Critics Association/USA Section and the Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program

Nate Boyce (BFA 06), Steven Lambert (BFA 99) have both been chosen for the Headlands 2010 Artists in Residence

Finn Bugge (MFA 09) has been the awarded a Filmmaker Education Scholarship by the San Francisco Film Society

Wrenay Gomez Charlton (MFA 06) was selected by juror Stella Kramer for the Center for Fine Art Photography's “Portfolio ShowCase Volume 3.” She also received the Solo Show Award and prints from her series, The Space Between, on display in the Center’s South Gallery in Fort Collins, CO

Steven Day (MFA 94) won second place from the National Headliners Awards, Third Place from the National Press Photography Association, and an Award of Excellence from the Pictures of the Year International for photograph Miracle on the Hudson (distributed by the Associated Press) which captured US Airways Flight 1549’s water landing in the Hudson River, January 15, 2009

Felipe Dulzaides (MFA 01) is a winner of the 2010-2011 Rome Prize by the American Academy in Rome. Recipients of the Rome Prize Competition are provided with a fellowship that includes a stipend, a study or studio, and room and board for a period of 6 months to 2 years in Rome, Italy

Nina Elder (MFA 09) was awarded an Idea Fund Grant for her project called PLAND (Practice Liberating Art through Necessary Dislocation), an off-the-grid program that supports the development of experimental and research-based projects in the context of the Taos mesa.

Lora Groves (MFA 05) was selected for the Morris Graves Foundation Residency, Loleta, CA

Ryan Hackett (MFA 07) was awarded the Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize

Michelle Handelman (BFA 89) received a 2009 Experimental Television Center Finishing Fund Grant, Owego, NY and was nominated for a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant, 2009

Cameron Hockenson (MFA 08) has been awarded the Camargo Foundation Fellowship

Eirik Johnson (MFA 03) has been selected as one of nine finalists for Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston for its 2010 James and Audrey Foster Prize, the ICA’s biennial award for Boston-area artists

Annie Leibovitz (BFA 71) was awarded the 2010 Woman of Distinction Award from the O’Keefe Museum, Santa Fe, NM as well as being honored for her lifetime accomplishments in the arts and public service with the 31st Annual Common Wealth Awards of Distinguished Service. These prestigious awards recognize individuals who have enriched the global community through their life’s work

America Meredith (MFA 05) was awarded First Place for Abstract Water-based Painting in the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) Indian Market

Obituaries

Robert Jay Kaufman (BFA 73) died on January 8, 2010 in Brookline, MA. Robert was the author and illustrator of Blockology: An Offbeat Walking Guide to Lower Manhattan. His illustrative work appeared in major publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, Travel and Leisure, Games, and Science, including the children’s book, Count-A-Saurus. He divided his time as a professor in the Illustration/Animation Department at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University with walking blocks in Boston and New York City. Robert is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan R. Scott, and his son Felix Kaufman.

Ruth A. Wall (BFA 73) died on December 14 in Vernal, Utah. Ruth was born in Wyoming and moved to Utah as a child. She taught high school until she enlisted in the Army. She was trained to ferry planes and then as a physical therapist. After her Army discharge Ruth used the GI Bill to attend the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and the Academic Frochot in Paris. Her passions were making art and travel. She also wrote prose and poetry. Wall was an Abstract Expressionist painter who also loved to draw the figure. In addition, she produced an astonishing body of lithographs which were the subject of a book "Love of the Stone" which accompanied an exhibition at the Art Exchange Gallery in San Francisco in 2007. The Crocker Museum in Sacramento and the San Jose Museum hold her work. Ruth was a San Franciscan in spirit and soul residing for 55 years in North Beach.
