I Bruise Easily

Opening Reception: August 1 | 5–7pm (Artist Talks @ 5:30pm)

Although studio residencies are a regular occurrence at SFAI, this summer’s incarnation was rather out of the ordinary. There were five student-artists instead of the usual twelve, most of whom had spent minimal time together. All five were working in vastly different medias using wildly different processes, including photography, painting, sewing, and felting. At any given moment, silk paintings were hung next to makeshift cardboard signs and leotards drenched in glitter. All the same, a certain common goal was found as student-artists sought to make a mark on the space, however temporary it would ultimately be. Intense and insightful critiques, combined with students working at all hours of the day and night, transformed the space into one of productivity and experimentation. The results, however different they may appear at first glance, reflect a collective commitment to the transformation of self, work, and space. These are artists pushing their own boundaries and pushing at each other’s limits as they work in close proximity to one another. The vibrations are felt across studio walls, leaving a not-insignificant mark on residency participants. Every artist in this show, for better or for worse, bruises easily.

Artists: Saycsar Fleurima, Elle Carroll, Callie, Andrew K. Pepper, Christopher Willams, Ruth Hartes; Curated by Terry Powers.
