Join us November 14-15 for SFAI CONCENTRATE, a weekend-long festival, art sale, and series of artist-driven events open to the public. The student art sale showcases a broad range of contemporary art works from over 170 students, happening at SFAI’s 800 Chestnut Street campus. The festival also offers an array of family-friendly activities including art-making, a bounce house, ping pong rallies and goats in the SFAI meadow. 

SFAI is also pleased to announce that Whoop Dee Doo, the internationally renowned faux-public access, family-friendly variety show, will perform with a team of SFAI students in ingenious game show performances created especially for Concentrate. The show will be hosted every 20 minutes in Zellerbach Quad. 

 

OPENING NIGHT

Saturday night of SFAI Concentrate opens with a first look at the immersive art sale, plus the opening reception of The Alumni Exhibition juried by SFAI alumnus Griff Williams. Join us for food, drink, and good conversation as we kick off Concentrate weekend. Complimentary Fort Point beer, wine, and small bites served.

The student art sale offers work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, collage, photography, printmaking, editioned works, crafts, sculpture, mixed media, video, performance, fiber, adventurous gifts, and unexpected projects.

Juried by SFAI alumnus and San Francisco gallerist Griff Williams, this year’s Alumni Exhibition will feature the works of 24 former SFAI students across all media.

Sunday’s daytime Concentrate festivities are open to all, and feature a participatory game show produced by internationally recognized, faux public access, family-friendly variety show Whoop Dee Doo; work for sale by 170+ student-artists beginning at $1; child-friendly art making activities; a beer garden for adults; sweet and savory food trucks; SFAI DJs; goats; and so much more.

Fort Point Beer Company was founded in 2014 by brothers Tyler and Justin Catalana. The brewery resides in a historic Presidio building that was formerly used as an army motor pool. Building on the success of their five-year old restaurant Mill Valley Beerworks, Fort Point focuses on craft beers like a San Francisco-style IPA, a Kölsch-style ale, and a hoppy wheat beer.

JURIED ALUMNI EXHIBITION ON VIEW

This year’s exhibition features a stellar line-up of 24 alums who graduated as far back as 1971: Dominic Angerame. SOUNDS DJ’D BY THE TOWER RADIO

Students from The Tower Radio, SFAI’s streaming freeform radio station, will broadcast adventurous music all weekend from the SFAI Courtyard. Tune in any time to thetower.sfai.edu.

 

WHOOP DEE DOO! LIVE

2:30-6 pm | Zellerbach Quad

Watch internationally renowned faux-public access family-friendly variety show Whoop Dee Doo! and their team of SFAI students collaborate in a special one-time Game Show performance, created especially for Concentrate Weekend 2015! Hosted every 20 minutes in Zellerbach Quad, you might even have a chance to participate and win big!

 

FAMILY PRINTMAKING WITHOUT A PRESS 

1-5 pm | Courtyard

Pull unique, vibrant prints of arrangements made of leaves, stencils, string, bubble-wrap, and other materials from an inked gelatin base. Layer images and colors with this fun and easy printmaking method you can do at home. When you are done, take your print with you or give to a friend!

 

HIP! HIP! HOORAY MASKS! 

1-4 pm | Zellerbach Quad

Make an awesome mask to wear during the Whoop Dee Doo! performance. Create exciting masks with cardboard, googly eyes, feathers, pom poms and more!

 

WACKY MAN BALLOON FOREST

All day | SFAI Amphitheater

Visible from a mile away, Charlie Mylie’s Wacky Man Forest refashions the animated tube dancers often associated with used car lots and discount mattress centers as an immersive installation at the very top of SFAI’s campus.

 

BOUNCING HEART

All day | Francisco Street Parking Lot

What is essential is invisible (2005) is an inflatable sculpture of an anatomical human heart by the artist Felipe Dulzaides (MFA, 2001). Climb in and out through the aortas or watch the heart “beat” from the movements of people playing inside. Commissioned by the Scottsdale Commission of Public Art in 2005 and previously exhibited on the Zellerbach Quad in 2012, Dulzaides’ interactive sculpture has returned to SFAI for a second Concentrate in a row!

 

LESLIE SHOWS & G.H. ROTHE EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW*

In the Walter and McBean galleries we present two concurrent solo exhibitions: Leslie Shows and G.H. Rothe: Seven Paintings (both on view through December 12).

SPEED LEVITCH TALKING HEAD EXPERIENCE!

Get to know the SFAI campus from the most famous tour guide in the United States, Timothy "Speed" Levitch! Audio/Visual tours will be viewable on monitors across campus all day. Find them all!

 

GOATS IN THE SFAI MEADOW + GARDENING ACTIVITY

All day | SFAI Meadow

Learn about the history of the SFAI Meadow and get to know our special visitors: goats from City Grazing who are helping keep the meadow tidy. City Grazing’s goats are friendly, lively, and great with children.

Sundays are the weekly workday in the Meadow and a group of SFAI students will be planting, clearing brush, and caring for our campus green space. Feel free to bring your gardening gloves and lend a hand or just enjoy a moment of quiet in this unexpected urban landscape. Meadow volunteers will also host a hands-on activity great for families!
