Performance and the Limits of Fiction

Matthew Goulish co-founded Every House Has a Door in 2008 with Lin Hixson. Drawn to historically neglected subjects, Every House creates performances in which the subject remains largely absent from the finished work. Performances distill and separate presentational elements into distinct modes—recitation, installation, movement, music—affording each its own space and time, and inviting viewers to assemble the parts in duration, to rediscover the missing subject. The company’s most recent work, Testimonium (2013), a collaboration with the band Joan of Arc, responded to Charles Reznikoff’s Testimony poems. Goulish’s books include 39 Microlectures: In proximity of performance (Routledge, 2000), and The Brightest Thing in the World: 3 lectures from The Institute of Failure (Green Lantern Press, 2012). He was awarded a Lannan Foundation Writer's Residency in 2004, and he and Hixson received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Fellowship in 2014. He teaches at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
