Presented in partnership with Larry Sultan Study Hall

Through photography, video, and sculpture, Lindsey White’s work explores the slippery ways in which images both document and manipulate ideas of the real. Inspired by the professional and amateur worlds of magic, comedy, and other “staged” professions, she’s interested in the relationship between image and illusion, art and entertainment, process and product. Like a good joke, the results tend to pit cartoonish occurrence against the mundane physicality of everyday life. One of her ongoing projects is with Los Angeles comedian and actor Ron Lynch. A seasoned performer with countless alter egos, Lynch is the model collaborator to explore the physicality of staged performance, public and private notions of success and failure, and the often unconscious ways in which an audience is influenced.

White has exhibited at Barengasse Museum, Zurich; ACME, Los Angeles; SFO Museum, San Francisco; Sydhavn Station, Copenhagen; Art Gym, Portland, OR; Aurora Picture Show, Houston; Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco; and Deadpan Exchange II Festival, Berlin. She is a 2017 recipient of SFMOMA’s Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) Award with an upcoming show in July. White is a co-founder of Will Brown, a para-curatorial / artist-run experiment with Jordan Stein and David Kasprzak whose main objective is to manipulate the structures of exhibition-making as a critical practice. Will Brown recently mounted a solo exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive and has realized projects with Kadist Foundation, Wattis Institute, di Rosa, Ulrich Museum of Art, Southern Exposure, and is developing a forthcoming exhibition for SFAI. Lindsey White is an Assistant Professor and the Photography Department Head at SFAI.

This lecture is part of Larry Sultan Study Hall, a series of public lectures, events, readings and curriculum (running from January to July) related to the life and work of Larry Sultan. Throughout the spring students from San Francisco Art Institute and California College of the Arts will collaborate with SFMOMA through a Sultan-inspired class that culminates in an experimental event on May 5, 2017. Please check the larrysultanstudyhall.com event calendar for details.
