Led by SFAI alum and faculty member Lisa K. Blatt, this public program will introduce participants to valuable resources which assist citizens in expressing and protecting their First Amendment rights. Laptops and information will also be provided to quickly allow participants to register to vote in California.

Lisa K. Blatt has exhibited extensively internationally, in museums, galleries and non-profits and her art is in institutional collections.   Cindy Sherman chose and wrote about Blatt, when asked which one artist Sherman thought was doing groundbreaking work (Smithsonian Magazine (March 2012)).  Blatt’s work has been exhibited on five continents (soon to be six) including at the Shanghai Biennial, China, the Havana Biennial, Cuba, Museo de Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Reykjavik Museum of Photography, Iceland (solo show), Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Contemporary Art Platform and Freud Museum, London, Kunstverein Haus, Germany, Mills College Art Museum Oakland (solo), David Brower Center, Berkeley, CA, Contemporary Jewish Museum and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, CA, Phillips Collection Museum, Washington, DC and Sean Kelly in New York.

She has been awarded many grants and residencies including from: the National Science Foundation, NASA and Carnegie Mellon, the Kitteredge Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation, The Center for Land Use Interpretation, The Center for Cultural Innovation, and the Djerassi Foundation.  Her work is in public and private collections and was commissioned for the Sierra Fund’s Tribute Trail in California and the J. Michael Bishop Art Collection at University of California, San Francisco.

This event is part of series of open call events in conjunction with A Living Thing an interactive exhibition platform featuring programming developed in collaboration with members of the SFAI community: students, staff, faculty, and the general public.

A Living Thing seeks to create space for common ground within our increasingly fractured civil discourse. Throughout its run, A Living Thing will offer a sanctuary for conversations, performances, debate, and acts of solidarity and resistance—through an open mic during all gallery hours, and this open call to students, artists, activists, citizens, residents, visitors, and others that wish to contribute to the life represented by the flag.

SFAI invites participation in A Living Thing. Please visit sfai.edu/flagexchange to submit your ideas.
