2nd Independence - Part 1
Tuesday, Feb 21, 2017, 6:00PM - 7:00PM
Walter and McBean Galleries
800 Chestnut St

Eric Carson’s work subverts structures of information to create new constellations of meaning.  He currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA with his partner and collaborator Kristin Shiplet.

"Unfettered and unregulated capitalism is a brutal and revolutionary force that exploits human beings and the natural world until exhaustion or collapse.  Marx’s prediction accelerated under the Clinton administration when Democrats reached fundraising parity with Republicans.  We see its completion as Trump appoints oligarchs and dismantles checks on corporate power.  We must harshly evaluate our position.

The current administration is only the most obvious and egregious manifestation of anonymous corporate power.  It will never stop, even if we stop Trump, until it consumes the planet and us along with it.  We must come to the same conclusion Jefferson arrived at 241 years ago.  Ourselves, our brothers and sisters, and our planet hang in the balance.

The Declaration of Independence is a text that must become palimpsest to remain relevant. Royal grievances must be replaced with corporate ones.

A redrafted Declaration will be read aloud, revisions will be discussed."

This event is part of series of open call events in conjunction with A Living Thing an interactive exhibition platform featuring programming developed in collaboration with members of the SFAI community: students, staff, faculty, and the general public.

A Living Thing seeks to create space for common ground within our increasingly fractured civil discourse. Throughout its run, A Living Thing will offer a sanctuary for conversations, performances, debate, and acts of solidarity and resistance—through an open mic during all gallery hours, and this open call to students, artists, activists, citizens, residents, visitors, and others that wish to contribute to the life represented by the flag.

SFAI invites participation in A Living Thing. Please visit sfai.edu/flagexchange to submit your ideas.
