Both halls are equipped with a shared kitchen, coin-operated laundry, computer station, and lounge facilities. The shared kitchens include stoves, prep areas, a sink, dish rack, and dishes. In each room, residents will find wireless Internet, cable, and a dedicated phone line. Residents will also have in their room a television, trash can, mirror, microwave, and a refrigerator.
All rooms in Sutter Hall include private bathrooms, but Sutter Hall does not have any single occupancy rooms. There are no closets in Sutter Hall but wardrobes and lockers are available in each room. Mail for SFAI Residents living at Sutter Hall should be addressed as follows:

A counselor from the SFAI Counseling Services Office offers weekly walk-in office hours at the halls. Students typically stop by to see the counselor in order to get advice, work through difficult situations, share concerns, and get more information about counseling at SFAI. In addition to individual counseling, the counselors also offer group counseling for students who wish to talk about their concerns in a community setting.
Campus tutors conduct one-on-one and group sessions with students at both halls. They are also available for appointments at the Chestnut Street campus. For information on how to connect with a tutor, please contact Academic Support Services.
Café Cash Meal Plan
Students residing in campus housing are required to have a $600 Café Cash Meal Plan each semester, which is included in the housing costs. The Café, located on SFAI’s main campus, serves breakfast, lunch, and other light fare from morning to early evening. The à la carte menu changes daily and boasts organic, sustainable options.
Students use the Café Cash Meal Plan by presenting their school ID to the cashier. The sale is debited from their Café Cash account. Students may refill their Café Cash account by calling the Student Accounts Office at 415.749.4544 or by visiting MealTime Online. Please note: at the end of each semester, unused Café Cash is forfeited and does not carry over to subsequent semesters.
The residence halls are staffed by students and professionals who strive to ensure that the buildings are a safe, secure, inclusive, artistically inspiring, and engaging place which reflects the academic mission of the institute and encourages the personal growth and academic success of its residents. Although each staff member has his or her own set of responsibilities and duties, this common goal is the motivation for all of their work. Below are brief descriptions of the staff members that work in Sutter and Abby Halls.
Resident Advisors (RAs) are full-time SFAI students who live and work in the residence halls. They undergo in-depth training in community development, programming, and safety and are charged with creating a healthy, supportive, and inclusive community in Sutter and Abby Halls. To accomplish this goal, the RA team puts together social and educational programs, mediates roommate conflicts, responds to emergencies, and enforces housing policy. They conduct regular meetings to keep residents informed and to address community concerns. They remain visible and available in the halls and spend time getting to know each of their residents on a personal level. Because of this, they are often able to detect and address personal and community issues in their early stages.
Front Desk Assistants
Our front desks are staffed 24 hours a day throughout the academic year. Between the hours of 8 am and midnight, the desk is covered by a team of student staff members. Between the hours of midnight and 8 am, the desk is staffed by professional security guards. The front desk assistants are primarily responsible for maintaining safety and security, assisting residents who are locked out of their rooms, sorting mail and distributing packages, and checking out equipment (such as vacuum cleaners, pots and pans, and recreational equipment). The front desk assistants are often the first faces you see when you get home from a long day, and they are always available if you need assistance.
The Resident Director is a professional SFAI staff member who lives in the residence halls and is responsible for the overall operation of the buildings, the community-building efforts of the Resident Advisors, and the organization and staffing of the front desks. The Resident Director trains and supervises all residence hall student staff members, addresses resident and parent concerns, upholds community standards and policies, and ensures the safety and security of the building.
The Housing Coordinator is a professional staff member who assists theResidence Director with the administrative aspects of running the residence hall. The primary responsibilities include overseeing the housing application process and coordinating facilities issues. The Housing Coordinator also advises the Hall Council and oversees the Abby Hall West Wall Gallery.
Associate Dean of Students
The Associate Dean of Students is a member of the Student Affairs staff and oversees SFAI’s Housing and Residential Life program. This person oversees the overall management and mission of the Housing and Residential Life program, provides support to hall staff, and is available as a resource for residents.
If you are experiencing an urgent maintenance issue (such as a power outage, an overflowing toilet or bathtub, a major leak, or an elevator outage with trapped passengers) do not submit a maintenance request by email. Instead, report your problem immediately to a building staff member.
Students should report all nonurgent maintenance concerns by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. After a maintenance request is submitted, a staff member will come to your room to investigate your concern. If you are not at home, the staff member will attend to your request in your absence.
