Irene Carvajal

Irene Carvajal is a multidisciplinary Costa Rican American artist. Her art practice includes printmaking, collage, sculpture, and installation. Both from a formal and a conceptual point of view, her focus is on mass-produced objects, globalized labor forces, and their socio-political impact and value. She has exhibited in the United States, Costa Rica, and Japan. Over the course of her career, Carvajal has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, teacher, and curator. She pursued her BFA at the University of Costa Rica and the University of Kansas and her MFA with an emphasis in Printmaking at SFAI. She has also completed art residencies in Yokohama, Japan, and San Jose, Costa Rica. Carvajal is currently the curator for works on paper at the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame, California; guest lecturer at Stanford University; and an artist in residence at Root Division in San Francisco.
