Scholarships and fellowships are awarded to incoming students each year and are renewable for the length of the student’s academic program.

Undergraduate Awards
 

Academic Scholarships
 

All admitted first-degree and second-degree BA and BFA students are automatically considered for these academic scholarships. Scholarships are based on GPA and portfolio or critical essay and will be awarded yearly. Recipients of this award must maintain full time status and passing grades.

California Transfer Scholarship
 

Award Amount
$20,000 yearly

Eligibility
Direct transfer students from any California community college pursuing their first bachelor’s degree will be automatically eligible for the California Transfer Scholarship provided that they are admissible to SFAI with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. There will be no limit to the number of scholarships available each semester and no additional application required to receive funds. This scholarship will replace any previously awarded Academic Scholarship.

BFA Portfolio Achievement Scholarship

Award Amount
$30,000 yearly

Eligibility
The scholarship is highly competitive, and receiving one represents a prestigious honor. The scholarship is $30,000 per year, renewable, and replaces any previously awarded Academic Scholarship.

All applicants who submit their complete application and portfolio on or before the priority deadline will be considered for this award during the admissions process.

BA Critical Essay Achievement Scholarship

Award Amount
$30,000 yearly

Eligibility
Offered to an outstanding BA applicant who submitted their complete application by the priority application deadline and is based on the merit of their critical essay. The scholarship replaces any previously awarded Academic Scholarship.

How to Apply
All applicants who submit their complete application and portfolio on or before the priority deadline will be considered for this award during the admissions process.

PreCollege Scholarship

Award Amount
To be determined

Eligibility
Awarded to a select number of outstanding students who complete SFAI’s summer PreCollege program with the highest level of engagement. Amount to be determined based on level of merit.

Harlan Jackson Diversity Scholarship

Award Amount
$10,000 per academic year—$5,000 awarded in the fall and $5,000 is awarded in the spring. This award is renewable and the maximum eligibility time frame for undergraduate students is four years. Students must receive passing grades.

Eligibility
The Harlan Jackson Diversity Scholarship is one of many initiatives aimed to meet our institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion for domestic students. In line with our institutional mission, this scholarship is particularly intended to support campus-wide diversity in regards to gender expression and identity, age, culture, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, learning style, religion, occupation, nationality, immigration status, socio-economic status, and the many forms of composite subjectivity and life experience that span these differences. This merit-based scholarship is reviewed by a committee composed of faculty and staff.

Please submit the application, the Essay Prompt and Personal Statement sections by March 31, 2018 for Fall 2018 starts. Please email your completed application to admissions@sfai.edu.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Award Amount
$1,000 yearly

Eligibility
Awarded to any admitted student with a certificate of Phi Theta Kappa membership. An unlimited amount of scholarships are available. SFAI is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

California State Summer School of the Arts Scholarship

Award Amount
$15,000 yearly

Eligibility
Alums of the CSSSA program who complete their SFAI application by the deadline will automatically receive the award amount upon admission. An unlimited amount of scholarships are available. The scholarship replaces any previously awarded Academic Scholarship.

Scholastic Awards

Scholastics is an organization that awards silver and gold medals to graduating seniors who submit a portfolio to them showing originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.

  • Portfolio Gold Medalists in Art or Photography— $1,500/year for four years
  • Portfolio Silver Medalists in Art or Photography— 1,000/year for four years
  • Gold Medalists and American Visions Medalists (Seniors only) — $250/year for four years

SFAI Grants

SFAI also funds need-based grants for students who demonstrate financial need beyond any scholarship assistance.  Domestic candidates for the BFA and BA programs are eligible to be considered for these grants.

How to Apply
To be considered for these awards the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) is required. We encourage you to complete your FAFSA early in the application process. This form can be found online at fafsa.ed.gov and SFAI’s school code is 003948.

SFAI Legacy Scholarship

SFAI Legacy Scholarship is awarded to admitted incoming students with financial need who are a family member of an SFAI alum or family member of a current student at SFAI. The scholarship amount on average is up to $4,000 a year based on the financial need of the incoming student.

MFA Presidential Fellowship

Award Amount
$35,000 per academic year—$17,500 awarded in the fall and $17,500 is awarded in the spring. This award is renewable, and the maximum eligibility time frame for graduate students is the published MFA program length. This award cannot be combined with other SFAI awards.

All MFA candidates are eligible to be considered for this award. Recipients of this award must maintain full-time enrollment status and a high level of artistic development during the course of your graduate studies at SFAI.

MFA Provost's Fellowship

Award Amount
$12,500 per academic year—$6,250 awarded in the fall and $6,250 is awarded in the spring. This award is renewable, and the maximum eligibility time frame for graduate students is the published MFA program length. This award can be combined with other SFAI awards.

All MFA candidates are eligible to be considered for this award. Recipients of this award must maintain full-time enrollment status and a high level of artistic development during the course of your graduate studies at SFAI.

MFA Low Residency Fellowship

Award Amount
This award covers 75% of tuition. This award is renewable, and the maximum eligibility time frame for graduate students is the published Low Residency MFA program length. This award cannot be combined with other SFAI awards.

All Low Residency MFA candidates are eligible to be considered for this award. Recipients of this award must maintain full-time enrollment status and a high level of artistic development during the course of your graduate studies at SFAI.

These awards can cover up to 20% of tuition each academic year.

Eligibility
SFAI Grants are need-based grants awarded through the Financial Aid Office. Domestic candidates for the MFA, Low Residency MFA, MA, Dual Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate programs are eligible to be considered for these grants.

Post-Baccalaureate Awards
 

China-US Culture Scholarship

About
The China-US Culture Scholarship supports San Francisco Art Institute’s institutional commitment to cross-cultural exploration and preparing students to be global citizens. SFAI, located in the Pacific Rim city of San Francisco, was the first art school of higher education to have an official partnership with China. To continue this partnership, China Academy of Art is offering 10 select SFAI Post-Baccalaureate students a scholarship to the three-year IMFA (International Master of Fine Arts) degree after successful completion of SFAI's one-year Post-Baccalaureate certificate program. The prestigious China Academy of Art has three campuses located in Hangzhou and Shanghai, China. The IMFA is a full residency program in China. This China-US Culture scholarship is merit-based; reviewed by a committee composed of faculty and staff. More information can be found here.

Award Amount
After successful completion of the Post-Baccalaureate program, 5 select students will receive a Government Full Scholarship and 5 select students will receive a Provincial Tuition Scholarship. The Government Full Scholarship is a full tuition award, free room and board, health insurance, and a stipend to complete the three-year IMFA (International Master of Fine Arts Program in Contemporary Art) from CAA. Awards may be used toward the IMFA degree at CAA only and are not transferable to the tuition costs of the one-year Post-Baccalaureate program at SFAI. Successful completion of SFAI's Post-Baccalaureate program is the only pathway to receive this scholarship. For Fall 2018 only, SFAI MFA or Dual Degree alumni graduating between the years 2013 — 2018 may apply to this exciting scholarship in its inaugural year. The award is renewable for up to the published length of the IMFA program at CAA (three years).

Eligibility 
Applicants must be US citizens and must complete the Post-Baccalaureate program at SFAI. Yes, SFAI graduate program students who plan to graduate in May 2018 are eligible and encouraged to apply for this scholarship! Select applicants will be awarded full tuition China-US Culture Scholarships by the China Ministry of Education as well as free room and board, health insurance, and a living stipend while at CAA. No prior knowledge of Chinese language is required for admission but the IMFA requires a minimum result of 90 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS for non-native English language speakers. SFAI's current Post-Baccalaureate, MFA, and Dual Degree students graduating in May 2018 are eligible to apply for this scholarship and for the Fall 2018 inaugural year, alums of SFAI's Post-Baccalaureate, MFA, and Dual Degree programs who graduated between 2013 — 2018 are also eligible to apply.

How to Apply
I. Applicants to the Post-Baccalaureate program at SFAI, which is the Pathway Program to the IMFA, must submit the following items by March 1, 2018:

- Online application to SFAI’s Post-Baccalaureate Program
- Online application to China Academy of Art
- Elaborate on one of the essay questions below and submit via email with your full name and contact info to admissions@sfai.edu by March 1, 2018, in order to be considered for the scholarship.

II. Current SFAI Post-Baccalaureate, MFA, and Dual Degree students graduating in May 2018 and recent alums of these programs in or after the year 2013 may submit the CAA Application and essay question by March 1, 2018, in order to be considered.

- Answer one of the questions below and submit via email with your full name, program, year of graduation, and contact information to academicaffairs@sfai.edu by March 1, 2018, in order to be considered for the scholarship.

2. What is your vision of world art? How do multi-culturalism, social practice, and extended media define contemporary art of the last quarter of a century?
