SFAI provides a unique academic structure for higher education in contemporary art. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies houses SFAI's four research and teaching centers—Public Practice, Media Culture, Art+Science, and Word, Text, and Image—and offers degree programs in History and Theory of Contemporary Art ( BA, MA ), Urban Studies ( BA, MA ), and Exhibition and Museum Studies ( MA ). The School of Studio Practice consists of SFAI's historic departments of Design+Technology, Film, New Genres, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture; it offers a BFA, an MFA, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. This academic structure does not so much separate discourse from practice as intensify the interrelationship of the histories, theories, and practices of contemporary art and culture. Taken together, the two schools comprise a curricular matrix through which students are inspired to develop innovative approaches to art making.
